We use technology regularly.

Picture
To respond to:
  • Nonfiction - publishing responses to articles and speeches
  • Drama - creating blog posts in the voice of characters
  • Epics - publishing brochures that retrace Odysseus's journey.
  • Short Stories - publishing summaries, creating digital stories and making fake twitter profiles for characters
  • Poetry - publish an analysis to poetry and original poetry
  • Research - produce digital stories about the causes and effects of bullying
  • Here is a handout with ideas about technology integration.

The handout below gives examples of how I have used technology in my classroom.

Integrating Technology in my ELA class

Creating Graphic Essay Posters

Picture
My students create a poster that demonstrates their knowledge of a story's
  • character
  • plot elements
  • theme
  • tone
  • important quotes
  • literary devices
  • symbols

I told them that I wanted them to show me what they had learned from Romeo and Juliet. I had them to create these posters instead of the average 'essay' as an assessment tool. I provided each of them with construction paper, markers, scissors, etc.

Visual Autobiographical Sketches of Characters

Picture
For this assignment, my students did two things: they created a PowerPoint and then they wrote a character essay for either Lord/Lady Macbeth.

In their directions they were told to Include details from the play that reveal the following details:
  • what other people think about him/her
  • what Macbeth/Lady Macbeth said or did
  • what the narrator tells us directly about Lord/Lady Macbeth
  • how the setting is reflected in Lord/Lady Macbeth's character

Here are some of the resources that I used for this assignment.
Here is a handout that I used to have them begin the brainstorming
Here is a link to the PowerPoint template that you will need to download and use.  Here is Eugenee’s sample.
Here is a link to directions on how to upload the presentation once you are finished with it.

 Creating Faux Facebook Profiles

There assignment was to create Facebook pages for famous Americans.  Their assignment called for them to ...
1. Read an article about a famous American
2. Summarized this information and created a Faux Facebook page for their American
3. Uploaded the PowerPoints onto Slideshare and then embedded them into their blogs

Working with nonfiction

Picture
My students are talking to the text. They are making comments about and questioning what they are reading. I do not want them to merely summarize an article; I want them to read it, examine it and then respond to it.

Once they marked up their articles, they created persuasive essay that was published to their websites.
